What is stuttering?

Stuttering is a complex and variable communication disorder where the speaker experiences an underlying feeling of “being stuck”. This can cause significant tension and frustration while communicating, and can decrease one’s confidence interacting in academic and social situations.

About 1% of adults stutter, and it is more common in males than females. Typically, stuttering emerges during childhood between ages 2 and 8. Research has not found what causes stuttering and there is no simple “cure” for the dysfluencies present in speech for those who stutter. However, there are many things that people who stutter can learn in order to feel empowered, confident, and effective while communicating.
